Between Us

Feature Film

Even after 14 years of marriage and two children, Senna (13) and Deniz (9), Ilyas (41) and Yasemin (40) still feel like lovers. Together they run one of the best cafés in town and see themselves as members of an affluent, urban middle class. But when the two lovers reach the middle of their lives, everything changes. Yasemin, working alone in the café, is unexpectedly gunned down. There is no trace of the perpetrators. Ilyas, who should have been at the café, is a few minutes late and arrives to find his wife lying dead, in a pool of blood.

Ilyas must endure the insane pain of loss, only exacerbated by self-reproach – he feels that his being late is what caused the death of his beloved Yasemin.

While looking for the perpetrators, police and investigators shine the light of suspicion on his entire family and circle of friends. Fired up by ruthless media coverage, rumors of honor killing and terrorism are making the rounds. The family environment becomes fearful at first, then hostile.

Ilyas and the children are completely worn down by the investigators’ insubstantial suspicions.

Increasingly aggressive, the authorities are not only ruining their personal environment, but also Ilyas’ ability to support his two children. Finally, they have to close the café.

Despite everything, they find a way back to life. Ilyas understands that he must first face the racism he has suppressed before he can fight it.
